Notes
Fan letters are arranged alphabetically, not by date.

Only a very few of these letters also include an answer by the Heinleins. Most of the few answering letters are from Ginny. Robert did tend to answer those by service members personally

The fan letter files cannot be considered the complete fan correspondence from any given year. Letters to which the Heinleins gave personal, or business, replies were usually moved to other correspondence files and categories. There are numerous examples in these other correspondence files of an introductory ‘generic’ fan letter leading to a long-term correspondence and friendship with the Heinleins.

The interest/research quality of these fan mail files (other than the novelty of finding one’s own letter) is in noting the patterns and trends of correspondence from the public to the famed author, both in general and as it varied in response to publication of various books.

Indexing of fan mail in the online Archives will probably not be broken down any further than these bulk files.
